OUR STORY

Teerenpeli – Family-owned Finnish craft brewery

In 1994, in the midst of recession-era Finland, a small but determined spark ignited in the heart of Lahti. It wasn’t the most opportune time to experiment, but we felt that something had to be done differently. Finland needed a lift, and the bar culture needed a refresh—a place where the customer would get more than just a pint and where the contents of the pint would be anything but ordinary.

WHEN A PINT BECOMES AN EXPERIENCE

We wanted to create a place where beer would not just be a drink but an experience. So we set to work on four basic pillars: local resources, top-quality ingredients, care for the environment and a passion for one’s work. On this foundation, the first Teerenpeli bar was born in the heart of Lahti. It was like a living room with table service, like in restaurants. Relaxed, but full of quality-conscious ambition, where the service received as much attention as the beer itself.

FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL AND TOWARDS DREAMS

Just a year later, we expanded our operation, this time with our own microbrewery. The brewery’s first creation, a dark lager called Puolukka Lysti, was a tribute to the pure groundwater of the Salpausselkä region, local barley and Finnish forests. That was the beginning of a journey that took us from the dreams of a small brewery to the world of international award-winning drinks.

A TASTE THAT GETS BETTER WITH AGE

30 years later, we have grown, but our hearts still beat for the same values. There are now Teerenpeli bars and restaurants in eight cities around Finland, and we produce dozens of brewery products from local ingredients. In 2002, we also established a distillery, and our whiskies have since gained a reputation. In 2020 and 2024, we were even awarded Whisky Producer of the Year at the prestigious IWSC competition. In Lahti, you can also experience the Teerenpeli spirit at Taivaanranta restaurant and the stylish Wine Cafe Olavi.

While the world has changed and the value of local resources, sustainability and raw materials has risen to unpredictable heights, we have remained true to our roots. The four cornerstones that started it all still guide our every step. For us, the best always means sustainable, too—the best drink, the best food, the best service and the best experiences that will remembered long after the last mouthful.

ABOUT US

The Teerenpeli Group was founded in 1994, and since then we have grown into a versatile specialist in the restaurant, brewing, distilling and franchising business. The group is owned by Anssi and Marianne Pyysing and is based in Lahti, which is home to our administration and headquarters and the roots of our passion.

The Teerenpeli Group has an annual turnover of around €14 million, and we are proud to employ around 100 people who share our love for good food, drink and service. The CEO is Anssi Pyysing, who has led Teerenpeli’s growth while retaining the heart of the family company.
